Description

DEKOMAL GF-021 is a single-pack alkyd anti-corrosion primer for professional use, applied as a keying and anti-corrosion layer for spot or full priming of metal.

What a primer does under enamel

The primer film grips the substrate strongly and holds the topcoat on itself at the same time. Without it the enamel sits on bare metal and relies on its own adhesion alone: which is why it lifts away in sheets after a couple of seasons. The film is elastic yet strong and hard.

It cuts topcoat consumption

A primed surface does not absorb the finish and has an even tone, so less enamel is used. On a large job the primer pays for itself through the saving on the more expensive topcoat, not only through durability.

What the film resists

Weathering in urban and industrial atmospheres, mineral oils and greases, salt solutions, general-purpose nitro enamels, and swings in temperature. That last one matters for structures that bake in summer sun and freeze in winter.

Six hours instead of twelve

The primer dries in 6 hours: twice as fast as EXTRAMAL GF-021. The topcoat goes on once the primer is fully dry; for DEKOMAL PF-115 alkyd enamel its data sheet requires at least 24 hours of primer drying.

A primer for galvanised steel

Galvanised steel (profiled sheet, roofs, gutters, flashings) is not painted directly: it is degreased and given 1 coat of DEKOMAL GF-021. Once the primer is dry, it is topcoated with RUBBER FARBA rubber paint, PF-115 alkyd enamel or DEKOLUX. ZAKHYST 3 in 1 is not suitable for galvanised steel.

System and packaging

Coating systems built on GF-021 work both outdoors and indoors. Before priming, clean the metal thoroughly of dirt, rust, mill scale and oils, sand and degrease it; prime immediately after removing rust. One coat, 60–100 g/m². If needed, thin with white spirit, solvent or a 1:1 mix, no more than 10% by volume. Air and substrate +5 to +30 °C, humidity no more than 60%. Clean tools with solvent. Packed in 0.9 kg, 2.7 kg and 22 kg. Colours: red-brown, grey, black and white. Shelf life 18 months.

How much you need

80 g/m² in one coat.

  • 900 g covers about 11 m²;

  • 2.7 kg covers about 34 m²;

  • 22 kg covers about 275 m²: a batch of steelwork.

Application

Preparing the surface

  • remove loose rust, scale and flaking old coating;

  • degrease the surface with white spirit;

  • the surface must be dry: primer will not hold on damp metal.

Thinning

  • thin with white spirit, solvent or a 1:1 mix if needed;

  • stir thoroughly before use.

Application

  • apply by brush, roller or spray;

  • one coat;

  • drying: up to 6 hours.

Next

  • apply the topcoat once the primer has dried fully;

  • clean tools with solvent straight away;

  • store tightly closed away from flame.

FAQ: why prime and how long it dries

  • Can the primer be skipped?
    It can, but then the enamel holds by its own adhesion alone and lifts away in sheets after a few seasons. A primer also cuts enamel consumption.

  • How does it differ from EXTRAMAL GF-021?
    It dries in 6 hours against 12 and lasts over 5 years against over 4. Consumption is lower too: 60–100 against 80–120 g/m².

  • Will it cover rust?
    Loose rust must come off. The primer works on a cleaned surface; for bare rust use "Zahyst 3 v 1".

  • How many coats?
    One.

  • Can primed metal be left over winter?
    A primer is not a topcoat. Cover it with enamel, or UV will break the film down.
