Description

ZAHYST 3 v 1 hammered is an alkyd-urethane anti-corrosion primer-enamel for metal that forms a textured finish with a hammered, pearlescent sheen. It goes directly over rust, indoors and out.

What the hammered effect is for

It is not only decoration. The texture of small craters breaks up the reflection on the surface, so the eye does not read dents, weld marks or the remains of old corrosion under the coat. A smooth gloss enamel on the same part would pick out every defect; here they disappear into the pattern.

Three functions in one coat

Rust converter, primer and topcoat in a single product. No priming and no rust treatment are required: just wire-brush off loose rust and flaking old coatings, then degrease and dry the metal. It is a base coating that cuts both the time and the number of materials. The declared protection is over 7 years.

The technique is different

It needs 2–3 coats applied wet-on-wet at intervals of 10–50 minutes, without waiting for the previous coat to dry. That is what forms an even texture. If the interval cannot be kept, the next coat must wait at least 4–7 days, otherwise the not-yet-formed film may lift and wrinkle. Stir the enamel before use but do not shake it. The recommended two-coat film thickness is 80–100 µm. Drying takes 4 hours; the coating fully forms in 4–7 days. Apply at air and substrate temperature of +5…+30 °C and humidity up to 60% (optimum +10…+25 °C).

Where it is used

Steelwork, production equipment, metal furniture, gates, railings and decorative metal elements, wherever the metal stays in view and should look more expensive than it would under ordinary enamel.

Colour and consumption

Nine shades: gold, copper, sea green, blue, brown, chocolate brown, silver, anthracite and black. Consumption is 150–200 g/m² per coat, higher than a smooth enamel because the texture needs a thicker film. Thinned with solvent 3-in-1, solvent naphtha or xylene; shelf life 24 months. The primer-enamel is flammable: ventilate and keep away from open flame.

How much you need

175 g/m² per coat. Budget for two coats: 350 g/m²; a third goes on if the texture came out uneven.

  • 700 g covers about 2 m²: grilles, decorative elements;

  • 2 kg covers about 6 m²: metal furniture or a wicket gate;

  • 20 kg covers about 57 m²: railings or production equipment.

Application

Preparing the surface

  • remove loose rust, scale and flaking old coating;

  • degrease the surface;

  • no primer needed: the enamel is the primer.

Thinning

  • thin with solvent 3-in-1 or solvent if needed;

  • do not overdo it: thin enamel will not form the texture;

  • stir thoroughly.

Application

  • apply by brush, roller or spray;

  • 2–3 coats wet-on-wet at 10–50 minute intervals;

  • do not wait for drying between coats or the pattern comes out patchy;

  • tack-free in 4 hours.

After the job

  • clean tools with solvent straight away;

  • store tightly closed away from flame;

  • shelf life 24 months.

FAQ: texture, technique and consumption

  • Why are the coats applied wet-on-wet?
    That is how an even texture forms: 2–3 coats go on 10–50 minutes apart. If that interval cannot be kept, wait at least 4–7 days before the next coat, or the unfinished film may dissolve and wrinkle.

  • Will it hide dents and weld marks?
    Yes, the texture breaks up reflections and small defects disappear into the pattern. A smooth gloss enamel would show them up on the same part.

  • Is a primer needed?
    No, anti-rust and primer are already in it. Apply straight over rust once the loose layer is wire-brushed off and the surface is degreased and dry.

  • Can it be used on galvanised steel?
    No, ZAKHYST 3 in 1 is not suitable for galvanised steel. No paint goes directly onto zinc: galvanised steel is degreased and given 1 coat of GF-021 alkyd primer (DEKOMAL or EXTRAMAL), and once the primer is dry it is topcoated with RUBBER FARBA rubber paint, PF-115 alkyd enamel or DEKOLUX.

  • Why is consumption higher than a smooth enamel?
    A textured finish goes on thicker: 150–200 g/m² per coat against 70–150 g/m² for smooth ZAKHYST 3 in 1.

  • How much for a 1×2 m wicket gate?
    Both sides make 4 m². Two coats take 1.2–1.6 kg and three take 1.8–2.4 kg: a 2.2 kg tin, plus 0.7 kg for three coats.
