Description

ZAHYST 3 v 1 is an alkyd-urethane anti-corrosion primer-enamel for metal. It is made for surfaces prone to rust and mechanical wear, indoors and out.

Three materials in one

The classic way to protect metal is three operations: a rust converter, an anti-corrosion primer and a topcoat, each with its own drying time. Here all three are folded into one product applied directly over rust with no primer: just wire-brush off loose rust and flaking old coatings, then degrease and dry the surface. One day of work instead of three, and half as many materials in the store.

Not for galvanised steel

The primer-enamel is not applied to galvanised steel or zinc: it is unsuitable for galvanised surfaces. Alkyd enamels are not applied directly to zinc either. Galvanised profiled sheet, gutters and roofs are degreased and given 1 coat of GF-021 alkyd primer (DEKOMAL or EXTRAMAL); once the primer is dry they are topcoated with RUBBER FARBA rubber paint, PF-115 alkyd enamel or DEKOLUX.

Two hours per coat

A coat dries in 2 hours, so the second goes on the same day. The coating fully forms and reaches its service properties no sooner than 7 days after application.

Where it is used

Chemical plants, industrial zones, equipment, pipelines, sheet-metal and steel structures, power-line pylons: places where the atmosphere is harsh and the site cannot be shut down for a long paint job.

RAL colours

The whole range follows RAL: yellow 1023, cherry 3003, blue 5017, red-brown 8012, chocolate brown 8017, sea green 6005, dark green 6029, light grey 7035, grey 7042, graphite 7024, black 9011 and white. A colour can be matched to an existing structure by number, with no test patch.

Thinning and storage

Thinned with solvent 3-in-1 or solvent naphtha, no more than 10% by volume. Consumption 70–150 g/m² per coat, two coats with 2 hours between them; for maximum protection the two-coat film should be 80–100 µm thick. Apply at air and substrate temperature of +5…+30 °C and relative humidity up to 60%. Sheen: medium gloss. The primer-enamel is flammable: ventilate and keep away from open flame. Shelf life 24 months.

How much you need

110 g/m² per coat over two coats: 220 g/m² in total.

  • 900 g covers about 4 m²: handrails, a small gate;

  • 2.5 kg covers about 11 m²: a garage gate, both sides;

  • 22 kg covers about 100 m²: a batch of steelwork or pylons.

Application

Preparing the surface

  • remove loose rust, scale and flaking old coating: firmly adhering rust stays;

  • degrease the surface;

  • no primer needed: the enamel is the primer.

Thinning

  • thin with solvent 3-in-1 or solvent if needed;

  • more for spraying, barely any for brushwork;

  • stir thoroughly.

Application

  • apply by brush, roller or spray;

  • two coats;

  • a coat dries in up to 2 hours: the second goes on the same day.

After the job

  • clean tools with solvent straight away;

  • store tightly closed away from flame;

  • shelf life 24 months.

FAQ: rust, zinc and colour

  • Can it go over rust?
    Yes, the primer-enamel goes straight onto rusty metal. Brush off loose, flaking rust and any peeling old paint with a wire brush, then degrease and dry the metal.

  • Are a rust converter and a separate primer needed?
    No. Anti-rust, primer and enamel are in one product, which works as the base coat with no primer or extra treatment.

  • Can it be used on galvanised steel?
    No, ZAKHYST 3 in 1 is not suitable for galvanised steel. No paint goes directly onto zinc: galvanised steel is degreased and given 1 coat of GF-021 alkyd primer (DEKOMAL or EXTRAMAL), and once the primer is dry it is topcoated with RUBBER FARBA rubber paint, PF-115 alkyd enamel or DEKOLUX.

  • How many coats, and how long to dry?
    Two coats with 2 hours' drying between them, for a two-coat film of 80–100 µm. Apply at +5 to +30 °C; the coating reaches its service properties after at least 7 days.

  • What thins it?
    ROZCHYNNYK 3 in 1 thinner or solvent naphtha, no more than 10% by volume. The same cleans the tools.

  • How do I match the colour of an existing structure?
    By RAL number: the whole colour range follows the RAL system, from yellow RAL 1023 to black RAL 9011.

  • How much for a 3×2 m gate?
    Both sides make 12 m². At 70–150 g/m² per coat, two coats take 1.7–3.6 kg: a 2.5 kg tin, plus a 0.9 kg one at the higher rate.
