Description

IZOMAL by POLIFARB is a solvent-borne stain-blocking paint applied over dried stains before finishing with water-based materials.

The problem it solves

A leak stain, soot after a fire, a rust run, nicotine yellowing: all of them bleed back through water-based paint however many coats you apply, because the water redissolves the pigment and lifts it. A solvent-borne barrier breaks that cycle.

Repair without demolition

The saving is not the price of the tin but the work avoided: the alternative is hacking off the render, drying it, re-rendering and only then painting. This blocks difficult contamination without stripping the substrate.

Two hours

It dries in two hours. As a blocking layer under a finish paint one coat is recommended; once dry, any POLIFARB water-based paint can go on top: decisive for a rented space or a site that cannot stand idle.

It holds even on oil paint

Raised adhesion to substrates including those already coated with oil or alkyd enamels, so old gloss need not be stripped back to concrete.

A barrier against yellowing

It forms a reliable barrier and protects surfaces for over 8 years. The base is reinforced with GOODYEAR PLIOWAY acrylic resins.

Conditions and limits

Stains must be dry: fix the leak first. Treat mould and fungus with a suitable remover first; remove old lime and glue-based coatings. No primer needed. Thin with white spirit; apply at +5 to +30 °C, humidity no more than 60%. One coat under a finish paint, at least two coats when used on its own; the next coat after 2 hours. 150–180 g/m² per coat on non-absorbent substrates, 170–200 g/m² on absorbent ones. Brush, roller or spray. Semi-matt finish. The paint is flammable; ventilate while working. 1.1 kg, 18-month shelf life, do not freeze. It can also be used on its own over brick, concrete, cement and cement-lime render and other porous substrates, indoors and outdoors.

How much you need

165 g/m² per coat over two coats: about 330 g/m² in total.

  • a 1.1 kg tin: about 3.3 m² in two coats.

In practice:

  • a 1×1.5 m leak stain, 1.5 m²: half a tin;

  • a 3×4 m ceiling after a flood, 12 m²: four tins;

  • a 3×2.7 m wall after a fire, 8 m²: three tins;

  • soot above a cooker, 2–3 m²: one tin.

Spot or whole surface? With several scattered stains it is cheaper to coat the whole plane: patch-treated areas can differ in absorbency and show in raking light.

Application

The cause first

  • stop the leak and dry the structure;

  • stains must be fully dry: this does not work over damp;

  • after a fire, remove loose charred material.

Preparation

  • clear dust, loose soot and flaking material;

  • treat any mould separately and dry it;

  • old oil paint need not be stripped: just remove what is lifting.

Application

  • stir; thin with white spirit if needed;

  • brush, roll or spray;

  • two coats, the second two hours after the first;

  • extend 10–15 cm beyond the stain on every side.

Afterwards

  • apply the water-based finish once the blocker is fully dry;

  • clean tools with white spirit;

  • ventilate: this is solvent-borne;

  • 18-month shelf life.

FAQ: bleeding stains, oil paint, coverage

  • Which stains does IZOMAL block?
    Dried stains from water, soot, smoke, nicotine and rust bleeding through. It goes on before walls and ceilings are painted with water-based paint, with no need to strip the substrate, and forms a barrier against yellowing.

  • Can it go over a damp stain?
    No, it is meant for dried stains. Fix the leak first and let the surface dry out.

  • Can it go over oil or alkyd paint?
    Yes, IZOMAL has improved adhesion even to surfaces painted with oil or alkyd enamels. A sound old coating only needs washing with water and detergent; anything flaking is removed.

  • Can water-based paint go over oil paint?
    With a coat of IZOMAL in between. It holds on surfaces painted with oil and alkyd enamels, and once dry it takes any POLIFARB water-based paint. One coat is enough as an isolating layer, and the next coat can follow after 2 hours.

  • How much for a ceiling after a flood?
    Under a finish paint one isolating coat is enough, at 150–200 g/m². A 3×4 m ceiling is 12 m², so 1.8–2.4 kg, or two to three 1.1 kg tins.

  • Can it be left as the finish coat?
    Yes, on brick, concrete, cement and cement-lime plasters and other porous substrates, indoors and out. A decorative protective finish needs at least two coats. Priming is not required.
