How long sealant and silicone take to dry before water contact

A skin in 15–20 minutes, full cure in 24–48 hours, silicone cures about 2 mm deep per day. A table by sealant type and when to use the shower.

How long sealant takes to dry depends on its type and the joint size: silicone forms a skin in 15–20 minutes, acrylic even faster, and a typical household joint fully cures in 24–48 hours. The joint can get wet only after full curing, and a deep joint needs more time. Below is a table for LACRYSIL sealants by type and a plan for when to use the shower after the repair.

What “dry” means: skin and full cure

Sealant dries in two stages. First a skin forms on the surface: the joint stops sticking to a finger, but the material inside is still soft. Then curing moves inward, and only after that can the joint take water and load.

  • a skin does not mean the joint is ready;
  • a thick joint cures longer;
  • cold and poor ventilation extend the wait.

Silicone cures with moisture from the air, from the surface inward, at about 2 mm per day. So a 6 mm deep joint reaches full strength in about three days, not one.

Application temperature

Silicone, sanitary and universal

15–20 min

24–48 h, about 2 mm deep per day

+5 to +40 °C

Acrylic

up to 10 min, before a skin forms

24–48 h

“Universal”: +10 to +35 °C

MS Polymer “Universal”

per instructions

24–48 h, joint depth up to 7 mm

+10 to +35 °C

For bathrooms and showers the main material is silicone sealant “Sanitary” with fungicides. Silicone sealant “Universal” is for glass, windows and outdoor work. If the joint next to the bathtub will be painted, use acrylic sanitary sealant: it is painted after it has fully dried. For metal, stone and mirrors, use MS Polymer adhesive-sealant “Universal”.

What affects drying time

  • sealant type: silicone, acrylic or MS polymer;
  • joint thickness and depth;
  • temperature: below +5 °C curing slows down;
  • humidity and ventilation in the room;
  • substrate preparation: a clean, dry, degreased junction.

In a bathroom, never apply silicone over water or soap residue: the joint bonds poorly and cures longer. Even joint geometry also matters, because the thickest spot cures last.

When a bathroom or shower joint can get wet

  1. Within the first 15–20 minutes, tool the joint and remove the masking tape straight away.
  2. Do not touch the joint or clean the bath until a skin has formed.
  3. Do not use the shower or fill the bath for 24–48 hours. For a deep joint, count about 2 mm per day.
  4. Ventilate the room: silicone cures with moisture from the air, but the fresh joint itself must stay dry.
  5. If the joint is wide or deep, or the room is cold or poorly ventilated, add another day.

How to apply a joint so that it cures evenly is covered in the article how to apply silicone sealant.

Common mistakes

A joint is most often ruined by early water contact, application over old mould, or a layer too thick for the available curing time.

  • using the shower in the first hours;
  • a new layer over old weak silicone;
  • a joint thicker than needed, “just in case”;
  • working in a cold unheated room;
  • no time margin before use.

What to choose

For a bathtub, shower or sink, use sanitary silicone and plan 24–48 hours without water. For a joint to be painted in a humid room, use acrylic “Sanitary” and paint after full drying. For glass and windows, “Universal” silicone. For stone, metal and mirrors, MS Polymer “Universal”. How to choose between acidic and neutral formulas is covered in neutral or acidic silicone, and acrylic sealants in acrylic sealant: where to use it.

FAQ

When can silicone sealant get wet?

After full curing according to the product instructions. For typical household joints plan 24–48 hours, longer for deep joints.

Why is the joint sticky although the top has dried?

A surface skin has formed while the inner layer is still curing, or the bead was applied too thick.

How long does acrylic sealant take to dry?

A skin forms in about 10 minutes; full drying takes 24–48 hours depending on the substrate and joint thickness. After that it can be painted.

How can you speed up sealant drying?

Work in a warm room, ventilate it and do not make the joint thicker than needed. A thin, even joint cures faster than a thick one.
