IZOMAL stain-blocking paint: how it works and where to use it

A review of IZOMAL stain-blocking paint: how it seals flood, soot and nicotine stains, its specs, coverage and what to paint on top.

IZOMAL stain-blocking paint seals dried water stains, soot, rust and nicotine marks before you apply water-based paint. Two coats at 2 hours each, and the ceiling is ready for ordinary interior paint without yellow ghosts coming back through the fresh finish.

A familiar story: the stain comes back

After a roof leak or a burst pipe, the ceiling is left with yellow, brown or rusty marks. It gets a fresh coat of paint, and a few days later the stain shows through again. Primer and another coat do not help. This is how most people first come to IZOMAL: after a coat of stain-blocking paint, the ceiling is finished with regular interior paint and the stains stay hidden.

How stain-blocking paint works

The pigment in most household stains dissolves in water. A water-based paint or primer wets the stain and carries it to the surface, so every new coat turns yellow again. IZOMAL is solvent-borne: it does not dissolve the stain but forms a barrier the pigment cannot pass through. Any water-based paint can go on top.

The real saving is not the price of the can but the work you skip. The alternative to stain-blocking is to strip the plaster back to the substrate, dry it, re-plaster and only then paint.

Which stains it blocks

  • water marks and streaks after flooding;
  • rust runs from rebar and pipes;
  • soot and smoke after a fire, from a stove or a cooker;
  • nicotine in rooms where people smoked;
  • marker, coffee and wine stains.

It works on ceilings and walls made of concrete, plaster, plasterboard and other mineral substrates indoors. A useful extra: improved adhesion to surfaces previously painted with oil or alkyd enamels, so old oil paint in a hallway does not have to be stripped.

Where IZOMAL saves the most

  • Flats after a flood: no need to re-plaster the ceiling.
  • Homes after tenants and smokers’ rooms: nicotine is sealed under one coat.
  • Kitchens: soot above the cooker (after degreasing the surface).
  • Stairwells and older buildings: stains over old oil paint.
  • Offices and rental units: 2 hours per coat keeps downtime short.

How to apply

  1. Make sure the stain is dry and the leak has been fixed.
  2. Remove dust and flaking layers, degrease the surface.
  3. Stir the paint thoroughly.
  4. Apply one coat (at least two, 2 hours apart, when used on its own).
  5. Once dry, paint the whole surface with a water-based finish.

The paint is solvent-borne, so keep the room ventilated while you work. For surface preparation by stain type and common mistakes, see how to cover stains on a ceiling after a flood.

Limitations

  • Do not apply over damp stains or wet ceilings. If mould has appeared in a damp area, deal with the cause first; see why mould appears in your home.
  • IZOMAL does not fix the cause: if the leak continues, a new stain will appear nearby.
  • Outdoors, IZOMAL is used only as a standalone coating on brick, concrete and rendered substrates, in at least two coats.

What to buy

For a post-flood repair, get IZOMAL stain-blocking paint for the stained area and finish paint for the whole ceiling. Work out the ceiling area with the paint coverage calculator.

FAQ

What is stain-blocking paint?

A solvent-borne paint that forms a barrier over a stain, so the stain pigment does not dissolve and bleed through the water-based coats that follow.

How many coats of IZOMAL do I need?

One coat under a water-based finish paint. Used on its own, at least two coats, 2 hours apart.

Can IZOMAL go over old oil paint?

Yes. It has improved adhesion to surfaces painted with oil and alkyd enamels. Clean and degrease the surface first.

Can I leave IZOMAL as the final coat?

Its main job is sealing before water-based finishes. On brick, concrete and rendered substrates it can be left as a standalone coating if at least two coats are applied.
