Description

EXTRA LATEX is an acrylic latex paint from the PROFESSIONAL line for interior walls and ceilings. It goes over mineral substrates (plaster, filler, brick, concrete) as well as gypsum and wooden surfaces and paintable paper or fibreglass wallpaper. Metal primed with DEKOMAL GF-021 or EXTRAMAL GF-021 can also be painted.

Latex and a wall that breathes

The latex binder gives a film that passes water vapour: moisture leaves the substrate instead of gathering under the coating. On mineral plaster and in older buildings that matters more than it sounds: blistering and corner mould are what happen under an impermeable film.

How much washing it takes

Class 3 for wet-scrub resistance to DSTU EN 13300: 20–70 µm loss over 200 scrub cycles. That is the middle of the scale: the surface takes wiping with a damp cloth, but not daily, not with pressure and not until 7 days after painting. For a hallway that meets a child's scooter, or a kitchen splashback, class 1 is the wiser choice.

Sheen level 3

A matt surface, slightly less dead than deep matt: it does not glare but cleans more easily thanks to a denser film. It still does not pick out small plaster imperfections.

Where to use it

Living rooms, offices, medical, pre-school and educational premises, food-industry and industrial buildings, wherever an even matt finish is wanted under moderate traffic. Hiding power is class 2 to DSTU EN 13300: one or two coats with 2 hours between them. Consumption per coat is 150–200 g/m² on non-absorbent substrates and 200–240 g/m² on absorbent ones.

Colour and tinting

The base colour is white, with a transparent base (TR) as well. Shades are mixed in POLIFARB Color System or with COLOR MIX pigment pastes, pastel and saturated alike. Tint the whole quantity in one go: matching a shade a second time is hard, and on an uninterrupted wall the difference between batches shows.

Limitations and shelf life

Interior use only. Do not use in areas of direct water contact. Fresh plaster can be painted after 3–4 weeks, concrete after a month; prime with GRUNT EKO, PROFI GRUNT or GRUNT CONCENTRATE 1:4. Shelf life is 18 months, so buying ahead for a future job is a bad idea.

How much you need

The tin states 80 m² for 14 kg. That is one coat. The figures below are for two coats at 175 g/m².

  • 1.4 kg covers about 4 m²: a colour test or touch-ups;

  • 4.2 kg covers about 12 m²: one wall;

  • 7 kg covers about 20 m²: a room ceiling;

  • 14 kg covers about 40 m²: a small room, start to finish.

Application

Preparing the substrate

  • the substrate is dry, clean and sound: free of dust, grease and flaking coatings;

  • old chalk, whitewash and glue-bound paints are removed completely;

  • fresh plaster needs at least 28 days;

  • plasterboard joints are filled;

  • absorbent and chalky substrates are primed: PROFI GRUNT.

Thinning

  • usually unnecessary: the paint is ready after stirring;

  • if needed, up to 5–10 % water for the first coat or for spraying;

  • stir with a drill and paddle at low revs.

Application conditions

  • air, substrate and paint temperature: +5…+30 °C;

  • humidity 80 % or below;

  • do not apply in sun, on hot surfaces, in wind or draughts.

Tools

  • a roller is the main tool;

  • a brush for corners and abutments;

  • a spray gun for large areas.

Coats and drying

  • 2 coats: the stated class 1 hiding power assumes them;

  • a coat dries in up to 2 hours, with 1–2 hours between coats;

  • fully dry: 24 hours;

  • the coating reaches full resistance over 7–28 days: leave the surface unwashed for the first month.

After the job

  • rinse tools with water straight away;

  • store tightly closed at +5…+30 °C, do not freeze.

FAQ: cleaning, latex and storage

  • Can this wall be washed?
    Yes, with a damp cloth and no abrasive. Class 3 means 2,000 cycles: regular but not daily cleaning.

  • How does latex differ from ordinary acrylic?
    The latex binder gives a vapour-permeable, more elastic film. The wall breathes and the coating copes better with slight substrate movement.

  • How much paint for an 18 m² room?
    Walls 2.7 m high give about 48 m², two coats need ~17 kg: one 14 kg tub plus a 4.2 kg one.

  • Why only 18 months of shelf life?
    That is the figure the manufacturer states for this paint. A tub that has stood longer should not be used.

  • Is it suitable for a bathroom?
    For walls and ceilings outside the splash zone, yes. For the shower and the rim of a bath, no.
