Description

Household polyurethane foam is a one-component foam for door and window units, sills and general construction work.

It grows two to three times after leaving the can

The key difference from professional foam, and the usual cause of ruined work: 200–300 % secondary expansion means a neat bead triples within an hour, bowing frames and pushing out from under sills. Fill joints one third deep, never full.

Straw, not gun

The straw screws onto the valve, so no applicator is needed: cheaper for a one-off job, at the cost of precision and of any chance of keeping an opened can.

Yield

750 ml gives up to 60 l, 800 ml up to 65 l, 850 ml up to 70 l, and a 320 ml can gives 30 l. Real yield is always lower: cold, dry substrates and downward dispensing all reduce it.

Timings

Skin in 10 minutes, tack-free in 15–20, trimmable at 25 minutes, fully cured in 12–24 hours. Load the joint only after full cure.

Conditions

Apply at -10 to +35 °C, with the can itself at +15 to +30 °C: a cold can gives coarse foam and half the yield. Service -60 to +100 °C, 18-month shelf life.

Limits

Foam has no UV resistance: exposed beads crumble within a season and must be covered. It does not conduct electricity. Fresh splashes come off with foam cleaner, cured foam only mechanically.

How much you need

A 750 ml can gives up to 60 l, roughly 8–10 running metres of 30×30 mm joint.

  • 320 ml (30 l): one gap, a socket box, a pipe penetration;
  • 750 ml (60 l): one window with margin;
  • 800 ml (65 l): a window plus its sill;
  • 850 ml (70 l): a door unit or a large window.

A six-window flat is about 35 m of joint: four or five 850 ml cans. Buy spare: an opened can sets in the valve overnight.

Application

Preparation

  • bring the can to +15–30 °C;
  • clean the joint;
  • mist the substrate with water: foam cures on moisture;
  • screw on the straw.

Application

  • shake vigorously 20–30 times;
  • hold the can inverted;
  • fill the joint one third deep;
  • build deep joints in passes, misting each layer.

After filling

  • mist the fresh foam again;
  • leave it until it skins;
  • trim at 25 minutes; full cure 12–24 hours.

Essential

  • cover the bead against UV;
  • clean fresh foam with foam cleaner;
  • store upright; 18 months.

FAQ: expansion, yield and misting

  • Why did the bead bow the frame?
    It was filled to the top. Fill one third deep.

  • Household or professional?
    Household is cheaper for one or two joints and needs no gun, but expands 2–3×. Professional grows only 15–30 % and pays off from the third can.

  • Why mist with water?
    Polyurethane cures on moisture; dry substrates give denser cores, weaker adhesion and less yield.

  • Can foam be left exposed?
    No. UV destroys it within a season.

  • Can an opened can be kept?
    Practically no: a straw can sets in the valve within hours.
