3-in-1 paint for rust: how to apply Zahyst 3in1 primer-enamel

3-in-1 primer-enamel goes straight onto rust: 2 coats, 2 hours each, about 110 g/m² per coat, for ferrous metal (not galvanized steel). Preparation, drying and when to add a primer.

3-in-1 paint for rust is a primer-enamel that combines rust protection, primer and topcoat, so it goes straight onto rusty metal without a rust converter or separate primer. Below is a guide to Zahyst 3in1 anti-corrosion primer-enamel: preparation, coats, drying, consumption and when a primer is still worth adding.

What Zahyst 3in1 does

  • Three functions in one can. The classic system is rust converter, anti-corrosion primer and enamel, each with its own drying time. Here it is one material: one day of work instead of three.
  • Ferrous metal. The alkyd-urethane formula is made for iron and steel. Zahyst 3in1 is not for galvanized steel: zinc is degreased, primed with DEKOMAL GF-021 alkyd primer and only then painted with RUBBER FARBA rubber paint or PF-115 enamel.
  • 2 hours per coat. The second coat goes on the same day.
  • RAL colours, including yellow 1023, cherry 3003 and blue 5017.
  • Indoors and outdoors: fences, gates, pipes, machinery, sheet-metal structures.

Surface preparation

  1. Clean the metal of dirt, grease and loose particles.
  2. Remove loose rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. There is no need to take all the rust back to bright metal: the primer-enamel covers firm rust.
  3. Degrease with a solvent. ROZCHYNNYK 3 in 1 organic solvent, made for Zahyst 3in1 enamels, works well.
  4. Make sure the surface is dry and the air temperature is between +5 and +30 °C.

Step-by-step application

  1. Stir the enamel thoroughly so the pigment is evenly distributed.
  2. Apply a thin, even first coat by brush, roller or spray gun. For spraying, thin the enamel with ROZCHYNNYK 3 in 1 to working viscosity, but not more: excess solvent makes the film thinner.
  3. Wait 2 hours.
  4. Apply the second coat.
  5. Let the coating cure: it fully forms no sooner than 7 days, so keep it away from water and loads until then.
  6. Clean tools immediately with the same solvent. Water will not remove alkyd enamel.

Consumption is about 110 g/m² per coat, depending on the surface. The paint consumption calculator will tell you how many cans you need.

Do you need a primer under 3-in-1 paint?

No, the primer-enamel acts as its own primer. On clean metal or for extra protection, however, you can apply DEKOMAL GF-021 anti-corrosion alkyd primer: it improves topcoat adhesion and reduces topcoat consumption.

  • one coat, 60–100 g/m²;
  • dries in 6 hours; allow at least 24 hours before PF-115 alkyd enamel;
  • the film resists mineral oils, salt solutions and temperature changes;
  • colours: red-brown, grey, black, white.

The textured version is Zahyst 3in1 Hammer Effect enamel; its technique is covered in how to apply hammer enamel. The water-based alternative is the 7-in-1 acrylic primer-enamel for radiators and metal, reviewed in a separate article.

Safety

  • Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.
  • Wear gloves, goggles and a respirator.
  • Keep the can away from open flame and children; store it closed in a cool, dry place.
  • If enamel gets on skin, wash with soap and water.

What to buy

For most jobs, Zahyst 3in1 plus ROZCHYNNYK 3 in 1 for degreasing, thinning and tool cleaning is enough. If the metal is clean or the structure works in an aggressive environment, add DEKOMAL GF-021. The full sequence, using gates as an example, is in how to paint metal gates without rust.

FAQ

Can 3-in-1 paint go directly on rust?

Yes, that is its main purpose. Loose rust is brushed off; firm rust can stay.

How long does 3-in-1 paint take to dry?

A coat of Zahyst 3in1 dries in 2 hours; the coating fully forms in no less than 7 days.

Is Zahyst 3in1 suitable for galvanized metal?

No, Zahyst 3in1 is not intended for galvanized metal. Degrease the galvanized surface, apply 1 coat of GF-021 primer and, once it is dry, paint with RUBBER FARBA rubber paint, PF-115 enamel or DEKOLUX. Nothing goes directly onto zinc.

What do I thin 3-in-1 paint with?

An organic solvent such as ROZCHYNNYK 3 in 1. Water does not mix with alkyd-urethane enamel.
