Description

Joint sealant "B" is a one-component vapour-barrier acrylic sealant for the inside of an installation joint.

"B" means the inner layer

The second half of the pair. Outside, permeable "A" lets moisture out of the foam; inside, this one keeps warm room vapour from entering it in the first place.

What happens without it

Unprotected foam saturates within one heating season, the moisture condenses in the cold part of the joint, freezes and tears the foam apart. The outer sealant alone cannot prevent this.

More than windows

Also for door and window frame abutments, filling cracks and openings indoors, and sealing panel-to-panel and block-to-block joints.

Paintable

Flexible and easy to paint, so the reveal joint does not crack and is finished with the rest of the room. Adheres to concrete, PVC, polymer concrete, aerated concrete, render, brick and natural stone.

No thinning

Like "A", it must not be thinned with water.

Specs

Acrylic, white, applied at +5 to +35 °C, service -40 to +100 °C, about 0.13 kg per running metre. 600 ml, 1.2, 3 and 7 kg, 18-month shelf life, water clean-up.

How much you need

About 0.13 kg per running metre: the same as "A". Count the opening perimeter.

  • a 1.4×1.4 m window: 5.6 m, about 0.75 kg;
  • a 0.9×2.1 m door: 5.1 m, about 0.7 kg;
  • 1.2 kg covers about 9 m;
  • 3 kg covers about 23 m;
  • 7 kg covers about 54 m.

Simple rule: buy as much "B" as "A".

Application

Preparation

  • trim the foam flush with the reveal;
  • clean and dust off the joint;
  • degrease PVC;
  • warm the room to +5 °C or above.

Application

  • spread or gun a continuous layer over all the foam;
  • any gap defeats the vapour barrier;
  • carry the sealant onto the frame and the wall, not just the foam;
  • tool flat and pull the masking before it skins.

Finishing

  • fill and paint the reveal once fully dry;
  • leave moving joints exposed rather than burying them in rigid mortar.

Do not

  • thin with water;
  • leave foam bare on the room side;
  • freeze the tub; 18 months.

FAQ: why a vapour barrier, painting, joints

  • Why an inner sealant if the outside is already sealed?
    The outer one lets moisture out but does not stop it entering from the room.

  • Can "B" go outside?
    No. A vapour barrier on the outside traps water in the foam.

  • Paintable?
    Yes, once fully dry.

  • Panel joints?
    Yes, that is one of its listed uses.

  • In winter?
    Indoors at +5 °C or above; use "A" outdoors in frost.
